Shahidul Alam is one of the most influential photographers, educators, and visual activists to emerge from Bangladesh and South Asia. Over several decades, he has shaped not only the practice of documentary photography in the region but also the way photography is understood as a tool for social change, resistance, and storytelling.
Born and based in Bangladesh, Shahidul Alam began his journey in photography during a period when visual journalism in the country was still developing. He later studied chemistry at the University of Dhaka and earned a PhD from the University of London. However, his true impact came through his work in photography and visual culture rather than traditional academic science.
In 1998, he founded the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, which quickly became one of the most respected photography schools in Asia. Shahidul Alam also established Drik Picture Library, a photography agency that works to represent underrepresented voices from the Global South. Through Drik, he challenged the dominance of Western media narratives and created space for alternative perspectives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Later, he founded Majority World, an initiative aimed at correcting global image imbalance in media representation.
His photographic work is deeply rooted in social and political realities. He has documented major events in Bangladesh, including political movements, labor rights struggles, environmental issues, and human rights concerns. His images are known for their strong narrative quality, often capturing both the dignity and hardship of ordinary people.

Beyond photography, Shahidul Alam is widely regarded as a vocal advocate for press freedom. In 2018, his detention in Bangladesh drew global attention and sparked widespread concern from international human rights organizations, highlighting his role as not only an artist but also a symbol of resistance.
Alam’s philosophy centers on the idea that photography is not merely an art form but a powerful medium of witnessing and accountability. He believes that images can challenge injustice, preserve memory, and influence social change. This belief has guided his teaching, his institutional work, and his personal practice.
